Mastering Audio for the Internet (6)

That makes sense. But wait, let's go back a second. Dither??? Is that a nervous condition or tech terminology? For the anxious audio producer, both. Mainly, it comes from breaking down (quantizing) audio into digital bits. But Proffit explains it with aplomb:

"Dithering. When you quantize analog audio into a bitstream, there is something called quantization error. It happens no matter how fine you quantize it, even at 24 bits. The problem with quantization error is that it is correlated absolutely with the signal. And one of the things research has shown is that we can hear correlated signals. The big problem with quantization error is that it is a signal of itself that is correlated with the audio but is not audio, it is error. So the function of dither is to quasi-randomly add noise to the last bit or even half-bit of the signal in order to de-correlate that last bit's quantization error that we interpret as brittleness or something that we're uncomfortable with. When you add dither or noise to the last bit it helps. When we're hearing audio in real life, it is "dithered" by Brownian noise at the molecular level, so we're not used to hearing something that is absolutely quantized coming to our eardrum. [Brownian noise is background sound created by molecules knocking around inside your inner ear] I suppose that's really a layman's approach, but adding noise gives us a greater sense of the signal being accurate, despite having the quantization error. It's been proven in many experiments where dither was added that people had a more pleasing experience of the quantized signal with this addition. Noise added to the signal makes us human beings perceive more linearity and more refined detail in the signal. You actually can hear more details, for some reason, with added noise."

Is that digital technology stretching to go back to analog?

"Exactly," agrees Proffitt. "And it's a lot like picture dithering, because there they take those ugly big blocks and stagger them and make them smaller, like little staircases."

It would appear that there is something in life forms that does not love right angles, and too much perfection is a bad thing. If you're not approximating the matrix of real life, something sounds amiss. This is the kind of highly-technical but real-life insight that a pro can give which may make the difference between your product becoming a Internet hit or a true example of "MISTAKE."
