Stream the Millennium Party
by Tim Kennedy December 30, 1999 I am afraid it will be a virtual New Year's Eve here in Seattle this year. Because of a fear of millennium inspired terrorism, most of the big official city events are cancelled. You have to understand our paranoia. Earlier in the month, riots over the World Trade Organization meeting placed sections of the city under martial law. Only weeks after the tear gas cleared, U.S. Customs intercepted a suspected terrorist with a trunk full of bomb supplies and plans to stay at a hotel near our beloved Space Needle. So if we seem overly touchy, we probably have a right to be. Thankfully, the advance of technology means that the best of the millennium celebrations can be found on the Web. From around the world, images and sounds can stream into your computer. So whether your party is cancelled, you have decided to sit this one out at home, or you have to baby sit computer systems for Y2K, you can still take part in the biggest celebration of your lifetime. Of course the millennium really starts on January 1, 2001 but we can debate that another day. The Streaming Media World Guide to the Online Millennium Y2KWebcastStarting: various (currently online) Format: various Speed: various Probably my favorite site, this International Webcasting Association sponsored site is really a complete millennium webcast portal. Includes excellent coverage of New York events and the rest of the world. Many of the sites I have listed below are also linked here by way of an excellent time zone based interactive map. Webcast of the CenturyStarting: various (currently online) Format: Windows Media for some content Speed: unlisted From Gisborne, New Zealand to Honolulu, Hawaii, this site offers still images (updated every few seconds) from around the world. Like the Y2KWebbast site, an outstanding time zone based interactive map makes this Earthcam site very comprehensive and extremely easy to use.
